Summary

St. Lucie County has many levels of involvement with research institutions, research companies, and educational institutions focusing on research applications. The United States Department of Agriculture and the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute have provided the foundation within St. Lucie County for educational institutions such as Indian River Community College, University of Florida, and Florida Atlantic University to incorporate research-based curriculum into their degree programs. As a result, St. Lucie County has been able to establish an environment where agricultural, oceanographic, marine biodiversity, biomedical, and many other research areas are being explored within a single County. The Scripps announcement also provided this region with national and international attention for life science research.
